NO! NO! NO! Earthmate is Earthmate and Tripmate is Tripmate ... and nere
the twain shall meet!

Earthmate outputs a Rockwell binary format ... period, end of discussion ...
if you are bound and determined to use an Earthmate you can by a dongle for
the DB9 plug for $45 called the "GST-1" from <http://www.byonics.com> which
is a PIC based converter which will take in the Rockwell binary and spit out
the NMEA sentences.

The Tripmate feeds out NMEA sentences, BUT it needs to be fooled into
thinking it's talking to DeLorme software. It spits out the string "ASTRAL"
and wants to see it back ... you need to jumper pins 2 & 3 together so it
feeds the ASTRAL right back at the Tripmate, after it gets the "ASTRAL" it
starts spitting out NMEA sentences and pays no attention to the NMEA being
fed back at itself ...

  cheers ... brian, n1bq

As I remember it, DeLorme messes with the serial output of the EarthMate
GPS

Upon bootup it is in proprietary Rockwell mode as opposed to industry
standard NMEA mode which NetStumbler needs.

There is a simple fix, and that is to spit a so-called 'hidden' keyword
down the serial port to the TripMate, this turns it into an NMEA mode
unit.

I'm Trying to remember the word. It was something like *astral. Do a
Google search for it.

Cheers Nigel

Subject: [BAWUG] Delorme Earthmate and NetStumbler

Despite the fact that the menu of NetStumbler shows the Delorme
Earthmate GPS as being a possible GPS pick, I have been advised by
Marius Milner, author of Netstumbler that it is not supported and is not
expected to be anytime soon. Does anyone know of a product that would
support the use of the Earthmate?
