i've been trying to set up an open AP in SF's outer richmond using an
old laptop running Debian Linux w/ an old Lucent Bronze card
(pre-orinoco name change, and, as it turns out, not compatible w/ the
newer "orinoco_cs" linux drivers -- i have to use "wvlan_cs")
the problem is this: data from some hosts gets through, while data
from other hosts doesn't. nslookup of nytimes.com, for instance,
consistantly works from both wireless & wired networks, while nslookup
of http.us.debian.org consistantly fails ("no response from server").
the nytimes web site consistantly loads -- albeit w/out graphics,
which are coming from hosts like "grapics7.nytimes.com" instead of
their primary web server -- while, for instance, the slashdot homepage
consistantly fails to load: i just don't get any response from the
host.
both pseudo-AP and client run Debian/unstable, w/ a 2.4.19 kernel and
the pcmcia-cs-3.2.1 "wvlan" drivers. the basic network topology is:
802.11 client -> pseudo-AP NAT -> wired NAT -> 'Net at large
DNS lookups seem to consistantly fail on any host w/ a more complex
response than a simple name: http.us.debian.org & grahics7.nytimes.com
both map onto more than 1 IP, while slashdot & nytimes.com map to one.
i have yet to find any pattern to TCP connection failures.
my NAT was created by the following command:
/sbin/iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING --src 10.127.1.0/24 -j SNAT \
--to-source 10.13.1.127
any suggestions would be sorely appreciated -- and, when i get this
fixed, everyone in the area is welcome to use the AP, dhcp works
perfectly. (i'm @ 40th & geary)
