Out of curiosity, I downloaded the Boingo software. Looking through the
help I see they provide an SMTP server for sending email while on the
road. Here's the configuration detail for Outlook Express.
--------------------------
In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) field, type MAIL.BOINGO.COM
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
In the Outgoing Mail Server section, select
My server requires Authentication
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Click the Settings button in the Outgoing Mail Server section
Select the Log on using option
In Account Name, put your Boingo username
Check Remember Password (optional)
Put your Boingo password in Password (optional)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Ensure Logon Using Secure Password Authentication is NOT checked
Click OK
Choose the Advanced tab
Set the Outgoing (SMTP) setting to 25
Ensure the option right below (This server requires a secure connection
(SSL)) is NOT checked
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
--------------------------
uh-huh... no SSL, so your Boingo ID+Password are sent in clear. That's
not good.
Has anyone here used them in anger? Is this really true?
Incidentally, the software doesn't appear to like my Buffalo L11GP card.
