Hi,

I need to connect to an access point in another building. I'm on the 3rd floor in a three story building (on the left side of the diagram below, noted by the capital A). I can connect with my laptop reliably up to the point marked P, which is near the outside wall of the building. The access point I am accessing is a Cisco Aironet 1200 Series unit, marked by the AP letters on the diagram. It is at the end of the building.

In the third story room where I am located, I cannot access the network. Windows XP finds the network and connects to it, but it reports zero signal strength. After about 10 - 15 seconds, XP then reports that the wireless connection is unavailable (no networks in the area). So, I am absolutely positive that the access point is getting a faint signal, but it is too faint to actually do anything useful with it (moving the laptop/USB adapter elsewhere causes XP to just report no wireless network, so I know it's picking something up).

It seems to me that some kind of antenna attached to my WiFi device should do the trick. I'm using a Linksys WUSB11 version 2.5 (the one with MMCX connector). My room has a window air conditioner in it so something could be placed outdoors to avoid problems with the wall/window. However, I would really like to keep everything indoors. I don't know exactly what to get to ensure a reliable connection from the AP to the room. Also, I will probably get a WiFi to ethernet bridge to replace the WUSB11, so any models good for this situation would be helpful.

Remember that the access point is on a first floor but the client (me) is on a third floor.

Any ideas as to what to buy and/or set up/construct would be most appreciated. Thank you!
