Hi folks,

I'm a newbie to BAWUG, but an old hand at hardware and software (including
being sometime contributor to Linux source).

I've been asked to help provide free wireless access to attendees of a
weekend event at the Ramada Hotel in mid-February, and am using this as
an excuse to introduce myself and (hopefully) pick your collective
brains for ideas on how to accomplish this.

I got involved because initially the event organizers imagined they could
simply piggy-back everyone off a single $10/day T-Mobile connection via
the Starbucks in the lobby... needless to say I disabused them of the idea
based on the terms of service etc., though having done a site survey I
can see the appeal...

I was thinking of connecting to SFLan, as there's a node nearby on 6th
and Market, but a quick site survey reveals that I can only barely
get a signal outside on the pavement/just inside the lobby :-)

The site survey was done using NetStumbler and my D-Link DWL-G650 card,
with which I saw the following SSID's:

        TMobile
        Citi-Net
        SFLan10
        MNC
        2WIRE605
        SHWW-SF
        STAIN

I had been thinking of using a repeater or directional antenna to bring
signal into the main lobby... but clearly I need to use a network for
which this is an allowed use (hence my thought to use SFLan.)

Finally, and maybe my email is now officially "too long", I can see
SFLan10 from my attic on 19th/Castro, but cannot successfully attach.
Given the number of folks in the area that use wireless (I can see some
13 SSID's up here) I have been thinking of placing an SFLan node on my
roof. Can I build one myself, or do I need to use particular hardware
and software?

Enough already... and be gentle with me please!!
