I tried to figure this same problem out for two months.

She could IM and video her daughter in Chicago.  She could IM, but not video her daughter in Germany.  Her daughter in Germany could IM and video her daughter in Chicago.

Seemed to be a combination of firewalls, NAT, and software version conflicts, at least for my customer.

She and her daughters switched to Yahoo.
