FCC Auction Generates Lobbying Frenzy

The FCC's pending release of rules for the upcoming auction of the spectrum from the transition to digital television generated plenty of meetings and other lobbying activities Wednesday on Capitol Hill, ahead of a Senate Commerce Committee hearing Thursday on the issue. The netroots group MoveOn.org has urged its 3.2 million members to call Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, to "ask her to demand that the FCC support 'open networks' on our public airwaves and protect our airwaves from corporations like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast who want to stifle competition and innovation in the wireless market."

The auction in the 700-megahertz band of spectrum isn't expected until January, but the FCC likely will announce rules at the end of the month. Those rules are seen by people seeking changes as the determining factor in the outcome of the auction. The stakeholders have been seeing each other on the 8th floor of the FCC in recent weeks as they meet with agency staffers.
