I have a Pentium 4 3ghz running Mikrotik with 10 firewall rules, 8 queues and it moves 160Mbps (30,000pps) and the CPU never goes above 50%.

My whole wireless network adds up to about 30Mbps at peak times, and with all the firewalling and traffic shaping I do, it's giving my existing router (a rackmount PC, Pentium 4 3GHz CPU, StarOS) some trouble, maxing out the CPU occasionally at peak times. A RB230 has a 266MHz processor, and is a couple generations old to boot, so I doubt it'll be up to the job. If you're ONLY doing routing (no firewalling or CBQ or...) it might work, but it's still worth spending a couple hundred dollars up-front, IMO.

StarOS 2.x will run nicely on the Routerboard 200 hardware; haven't tested StarOS 3.x (but it /should/ work).

If you're not wedded to StarOS, people have said good things about the new Routerboard 300 hardware, but it's basically RouterOS-only. If you really want to stick with StarOS, though, look at mini-ITX motherboards, and other "small form factor" PC hardware. The small, fanless systems that many people want to use in their "home theater PC" setups will also work well for something like this. Just pull the hard drive, pop in a bootable flash device, and go.
