I haven't used it, but I've heard good things about OpenFiler. 
(Basically, it's a customized Linux distribution that does all sorts of 
NAS-type things, including iSCSI.)

They do offer paid support if you're worried about that sort of thing, 
and since you roll your own hardware you decide the reliability and 
capacity.
