The composite video link is the likely limit for most inexpensive cameras.
I used an Axis 240 box a long time ago for a webcam, and it had multiple inputs. The svideo input looked a lot better than the composite, so I used a cheap 2nd hand hi-8 video camera for it's input. svideo is probably no better than 640x480 digital.
