It depends on what kind of information that you have to inventory. If it is a security issue test on a LAN network fine. Otherwise you need "Administrator or root" access to the Box to do the job. Of course, you can have a lot of information about protocol running on the Box, just using a port scan software, like old Ethereal Wireshak ( http://www.wireshark.org/).
