The particular hardware you are using REALLY matters here.generally you won't know until you actually try it.

I had an rb411 plugged into 500+ feet and it powered up just fine, of course, but the ethernet was too picky and fragmented the packets (according to WireShark). It took me a minute or two but I logged in just fine.
