If the versions of mikrotik are different enough that you don't know if you have API access, the expect script is going to be a bit of work as well, the 2.8 to 2.9 to 3.x to 4.x to 5.x command structures and output changed enough to be a royal pain.
If the majority are post 3.x I would write code to handle those with the API and do the others by hand.
