Hi, regarding the retraction of release 4.6.1 and immediate removal of release artifacts for Linux from the stable PPA:
While admiring the hard work and resources that it takes to run something like Wireshark, I would like to note the small bit of avoidable difficulty I experienced with the 4.6.1 retraction. To wit, my company has a custom dissector that we built for Windows and Linux against 4.6.0-4.6.1 and were rolling out to our hardware-in-the-loop testing for a device. When 4.6.1 was revoked and the debian files pulled from the Ubuntu PPA, we were unable to reproduce our test environment for Linux without a manual rebuild. This was frustrating because the retraction notice says, "It is safe to use Wireshark 4.6.1 as long as it starts" which it does for us. So we could have kept on using it profitably. Some better alternatives from my view would have been to (a) leave 4.6.1 in place until a new version becomes available, (b) roll back to 4.6.0, (c) replace with a hotfixed 4.6.1 if available, or (d) replace with an updated 4.6.2.
