Just for completeness, I'll answer my post.

I'm deflating text/html, and I didn't have to do anything in witango. I do not have a header.htx, so the apache header was being used as is.

Presumably, the apache deflate output filter processes the witango output just as if the web server had pulled a file from the file system.

And I guess the default http header (and any custom headers) would ned to be modified accordingly.
