I've had this happen to me, too. Sometimes I can figure out why and
sometimes I can't. When I can find a cause it's often that I've made
some really tiny change to the database and now this particular taf
is looking for the column I changed. But I've also found that
sometimes it wasn't the FMP file after all.
If nobody has a good answer for you, I've used sort of voodoo fixes
to the taf that might be easier than rebuilding the database. (I call
them voodoo because they fix the problem while leaving me still
clueless.) If Witango editor crashes when I try to load or reload the
data source, sometimes it works to create a brand-new taf and drag
the components from my formerly working taf into it. I'll drag
components in one at a time, and see if I can open that action. If
that works, I go to the next action, drag it in and test it. When
I'm done the new taf is a seemingly exact match of the original,
except the new one often works and the original doesn't. Go figure.
Sometimes I end up replacing a search action--I drag a new search
action into the taf, put the old and new up side by side, and drag in
columns from the data source and make the new search matche the old.
Then I copy and paste the results and no results, etc., from the old
one into the new one. Sometimes that new one works when the old one
didn't. Again, go figure. Voodoo.
I know these are really simple ideas and you may have already tried
them, but they are the product of a similarly frustrated state.
Hopefully someone has some real answers for you--I'll be watching for
them myself.

I have an FMP file that crashes Witango editor. When I try to load it as a
datasource I am prompted for a username and password (both blank) and then
it sits and thinks and crashes the editor.
It works fine under server with the TAFs written for it before the behaviour
started, and it's a fairly basic flat file. In fact newer versions of the
e-commerce system are made from copies of it. I can write new TAFs by
loading a later datasource and doing all the work, then editing the host
details in BBEdit.
I have tried removing passwords, relationships etc. There are no field names
with space or illegal characters. I have made clones and copies of the
troublesome file and they fail too.
It's not too much work to rebuild the file and import data but it would be
nice to have some clue as to the source of the problem so I can avoid it in
future.
I am using FMP 6, WiTango Editor 5.5.08, OS X Server 10.3.9.

"An optimist is a person who sees only the lights in the

however, is one who sees the light and the shadows, but in addition
sees something else: the possibility of changing the picture, of
making the lights prevail over the shadows." (Felix Adler)
