Great, although I would agree, that on the mac, best freeware text/
html editor is TextWrangler. It is a lite version of BBEdit.

I will take a stab at it, TextEdit, by default, is a RICH TEXT
EDITOR, and not a plain text editor. You can switch it to plain
text, by opening a document, and going to the Format menu, and
choose Make Plain Text. You can also change the default in the
preferences.
