With me, never take silence as "I don't care". Take silence as "Rob is
overwhelmed". If you need an answer, you'll sometimes have to ping again.
Unfortunately for volunteer related stuff, a couple pings is sometimes
necessary. I have bouts of insane busyness and lose pockets of history.
There are 1,421 unread messages in wix-users that come from bands of time
over the last almost decade when I was unable to get through everything. I
really do try to read everything...
It would also be awesome if we get more people involved to a level where
there are more direct contributors than Bob and I.
Anyway, it's fine to fork off a part of the WiX toolset to experiment and
see if you can push it ahead faster. However, when you get to a point that
you think there is some stuff (maybe not all the experiments turned out
well) that everyone would benefit from, then I'd really appreciate it if
you consider at least starting the conversation about contributing that
functionality back to the core. Consider it a courtesy. The WiX toolset
gives everyone so much... if you take something, at least try to give back.
<smile/>
Note: Neil, in your case, it sounds like you made an attempt at
contributing back (the timing might have just been off). The above comment
isn't necessary about "you" but for general context for everyone. In your
case, I hope you'll
I'd also ask that you make the contributions back to the WiX toolset as
small as possible. It's easier to review and accept small chunks.
Additionally, the smaller the chunks the easier it is to address any issues
found during review. For example, if there isn't a good design fit
(something that can be avoided by discussing up front as Jacob is doing, I
believe) a small chunk is easier to redesign than a large chunk.
Finally, as you contribute more to the WiX toolset, the trust level goes
up. For example, Heath has been working in the WiX toolset for a long time
now and I trust his larger chunks will fit with the current design more
than someone who has never showed up before. However, that doesn't remove
the need to have discussions about design for bigger changes (such as you
may have witnessed a couple weeks ago about anonymous ids).
Sorry these emails are so long. I've been offline for a bit and apparently
have a lot of data to transmit. <smile/>
Disclaimer (I'll carry this for a while): This represents my current
opinions. As always, thoughtful and well argued counter points could change
my current opinions. <smile/>
