There is a way to build an MSI such that it doesn't cab the files at all, which produces a layout that is identical to an admin install. I haven't tried it myself, but it probably involves some manipulations of the Media element and the SourceName attribute of the Directory element(s), as well as removing any/all Compressed attributes in File element(s). I wonder if it would be possible to melt the MSM files and build patches based on that. Looking at the section of the Diff.wixmst file you provided, you may try simply removing that from your wixmst file (leaving the rest of the file intact). Both MSIs should have that "row" in their summary information, so the fact that the wixmst is attempting to add the row indicates that something is up there. There are no files outside of a merge module at all. I guess that rules out the WIXPDB approach. Anyway, wixpdb files are introduced in WIX3, isn't it? In that case, we do not have any original wixpdb files since we used WIX 2 to generate the MSIs. Is there any other alternative for admin installations?
