It may not suit your situation, but I always divorce the installer version from the version of any file within it because they aren't the same thing. When we create patches and upgrades, we increment one field of the product version but the files within it might not change, so the two inevitably differ. As a result we define pre-processor variables for : - A build number, passed in from the build process. - A product Id suffixed by the major version (for directory and registry key names). The ProductVersion number is major.minor.buildnumber.
