Shameless plug for Rob here, http://www.firegiant.com/. Since he is the
benevolent dictator of WiX, I don't think you could find any other resource
with more knowledge of the toolset or ability to fast track some fixes.

Subject: [WiX-users] Update challenges with Windows Explorer

Hello,

I have an application that uses Windows Explorer namespace and context menu
extensions. Updating commonly results in a very negative user experience due
to files being in use by Explorer and by other applications that use Explorer
through File->Open menus. During update, a Files in Use dialog lists the
applications in use and shows the use two options: 1) Close the applications
and attempt to restart them. 2) Do not close applications. A reboot will be
required. Choosing option 1 results in an OK/Cancel dialog saying that the
setup was unable to automatically close all request applications which makes
sense, since just killing the user level applications would be bad. At this
point, a second Files in Use dialog lists the applications still in use and
tells the use to close them and click Retry or Exit. There is a third option
on this dialog for Ignore which when used makes things ugly. It results in a
mixture of old and new binaries in the installation directory which in turn
causes our service startup to fail and basically renders things useless.

I would like to hire a consultant to help us improve our install/update
experience. Can someone in the WiX community recommend an individual or a
company that is a WiX expert? I've had a few companies try to move me to
InstallShield but I really like WiX, we have it completely setup and working
with our build system and except for some of these update challenges, it works
flawlessly.

Thank you in advance,

Wesley Gill
