Sounds like you're using an old version of metacity (< 2.9.13 from a
quick NEWS entry grep).  This was a bug in metacity that was fixed a
couple years ago (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=165243)

_NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_SPLASH is standard, I suggest using it.
