Agreed. The default minimalistic approach really turns new user off- I
have heard comments about this for many years. For me a default minimal
configuration in a distro for new users should at least contain:

   (1) A systray
   (2) A mounter
   (3) A mixer
   (4) A file manager
   (5) A terminal

in the dock. It is easy enough for experienced users to customize their
desktop.

Also, another problem with NeXTstep style interfaces is that it is
really foreign to people who have not seen it before. IMHO, a first
installation should offer the new user to take the "Guided Tour".
