I will try these pixmap variants.

No I am running 32-bit gentoo on a laptop. What xorg-server version are
you running? I am running 1.6.3. I also use hal-0.5.12 to configure devices.

I just upgraded windowmaker to the r8 as described in the gentoo bug
report and I continue to have the same problem. Maybe this is a
xorg-server issue??? since all worked under 1.5. I typically have to
troubleshoot anything related to graphics when I upgrade xorg-server.
For instance glxgears is giving me

1446 frames in 5.0 seconds = 289.095 FPS
1433 frames in 5.0 seconds = 286.548 FPS

but before the upgrade (with xorg-server 1.5) I use to get

4418 frames in 5.0 seconds = 883.510 FPS
4490 frames in 5.0 seconds = 897.871 FPS
4491 frames in 5.0 seconds = 898.054 FPS
4481 frames in 5.0 seconds = 896.043 FPS

Thanks for the suggestions.
