I believe this is going to come down to personal preference. I use Thunar (the
default Xfce filemanager) but I have used PCManFM in the past. There are a
number of people who use Midnight Commander (mc) and prefer it over any of the
GUI filemanagers.
One thing I will say, though - stay away from fsviewer and GWorkspace - both
are badly deprecated at this point - which is a shame if you are after a
desktop as close to the NeXT interface as possible.

Thunar had caught my attention. Rox-Filer also crossed my mind.
