Try replacing the write to /ctl with:

cat << ! | while read l; do echo xwrite "$l"; wmiir xwrite /ctl "$l"; done
font $WMII_FONT
focuscolors $WMII_FOCUSCOLORS
normcolors $WMII_NORMCOLORS
grabmod $MODKEY
border 1
!

It should tell you exactly when it fails. Does wmii produce a core file?

The same error. I've tried to do something like debugging in my wmiirc
(need to say - I have this failure with the default wmiirc too). So...
I've placed

wmiir ls /

at the beginning of my wmiirc and it had shown:

client/
colrules
ctl
event
keys
lbar/
rbar/
tag/
tagrules

So, wmiir works, but... but still fails with

wmiir: fatal: cannot write file '/ctl': broken pipe

Nevermind, it's fixed. I tested the wrong binary before a commit.
