---------------------------------------------------------------------- The Learning Kingdom's Cool Word of the Day for August 10, 1999 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sartorial [adj. sar-TOR-ee-ul] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- If something is sartorial then it has to do with tailoring or tailored clothing, more specifically, men's clothing. Example: "At our exclusive menswear showroom, you can experience the latest sartorial splendors, in an atmosphere of tasteful elegance." The root of this word is Late Latin sartor (tailor). Originally, the word referred only to tailors and their work, but the meaning broadened in the mid-1800s. There is also the sartorius, the longest muscle in the human body. It runs obliquely across the front of the thigh, from hip to tibia. This muscle is used when the legs are crossed in the "broken four" position, which was the position of tailors at work in Roman times.
