From a testers point of view here, I'm going to agree with Kirk and Alex as well. There is definitely no way this will be ready before release, but would be best to have it as a prepackaged plugin for now. While having it prepackaged with WordPress, perhaps adding links on the description of it for users to click to submit their success with the plugin, or a link to report issue, or email address included so users can report their issues... Also, does the FTP part of this "automatic upgrader" plugin have to be used at the moment? If I were you, I'd prepackage this puppy for now. Release WordPress today like planned, gather feedback from users trying it out, then go from there. Just my opinion and thoughts...
