At least the suspicions of the problem being server side are confirmed. Strange that WordPress ->PHP->MySQL didn't throw some kind of error in cPanel along although some connections DB problems are found in the following directory on the server account assigned to your guy.

Just to say you did, check in the root directory of the account and look for a directory called "tmp". In that directory there should be a sub directory called "mysql_slow_queries" that holds a list of MySQL logs by date. If there's a log file with a date within the last couple of days if not today's date then look through a few of those starting with the earliest one and work your way back. They might give you a clue as to what, when and whatever may have happened if you know what I mean or at least put you in the ballpark as to when this might have begun.
