Its worth noting, That the backup function, Is mearly the Export
functionality which has existed in WordPress for awhile, Its just a
shortcut to it's full dump(Which doesnt actually contain *everything*
afaik)
Turn PHP errors on(adding define('WP_DEBUG', true); to your config file
should do it) and perform a backup, It could be that your host is forcing
a time-limit which the export generation is hitting
