yeah clean_url, esc_url is also not replacing #'s with %hex's as well, so
basically this isn't the function I need to make them valid url's. Hrm..
time to do some more research to convert urls to proper browser urls.

They are not invalid path names, but that does not mean they are valid
URLs.
