Hmm, OK, I believe you; it just seemed that the 'problem' machines
happened to be doing this and that the WPKG-working-fine machines never
(or rarely) did so.

Right, I've investigated some more: the Event Log Viewer.

On a working PC, I see:

- WPKGService: Set script security context: successfully done
- WPKGService: Network resource successfully connected
- WPKGService: pre-action: successfully done
- WSH: ...
[... lots of entries relating to each package install ...]
- WPKGService: Script execution: successfully done
- WPKGService: Network resource successfully disconnected

On a WPKG 'problem' PC:

- WPKGService: Set script security context: successfully done
- WPKGService: Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by
the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed.
Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and
  try again..

Very strange: I can see from looking at 'smbstatus' that there are no
other Samba connections from this PC to the Samba server. And, more to
the point, I have no problem doing a perfectly normal domain logon after
the PC finishes booting up.

Any further ideas?

(Tomasz: I appreciate your continued patience and help here)

Cheers,

Dave.
