Action deadline: December 15, 2005 Dear Alan, Lions, snow leopards, African wild dogs, and other wild cats and dogs may be fierce and powerful, but they are also extremely vulnerable. Worldwide, they face serious threats from illegal hunting, habitat loss, disease, and many other factors. At current rates of loss, many of the world's species of wild cats could become extinct in the next 25 years. Wild canines are declining just as quickly. You can help these magnificent animals by urging your congressional representative to cosponsor the Great Cats and Rare Canids Act. The act already has 63 cosponsors and strong bipartisan support, but more backing is needed to obtain a hearing and pass the legislation. If you are one of the more than 60 members of Congress who has already cosponsored the bill, thank you for your support of this vital legislation. The bill would help protect more than a dozen rare cat and canine populations outside the United States that are recognized as endangered or threatened. These include the majestic jaguar of South and Central America, the African lion, the snow leopard, the cheetah, the African wild dog, and other rare predator species. The act would leverage private conservation dollars -- by as much as four to one -- and foster international cooperation for conservation initiatives. Protecting "keystone" species such as these large carnivores is a wise investment because it also benefits the many other species that share their ecosystems. In addition to the habitat loss, poaching, and environmental degradation that threaten wildlife worldwide, wild cat and canine species face an array of threats driven by humanity's long fascination with and fear of large carnivores. Human-wildlife conflict, exploitation for skins and the medicinal trade, and persecution driven by mythology and misperception all are having a devastating impact on the world's wild cat and canine species. The conservation of rare cat and canine populations requires a global commitment. Unfortunately, many countries lack the funding and infrastructure to conserve species of concern. Those countries that are taking action to aid threatened species need further assistance in implementing effective conservation strategies. With your help, we can continue America's proud tradition of leadership in the conservation of imperiled wildlife, and protect rare cat and canine species around the world for future generations to enjoy. I urge you to do all you can to pass the Great Cats and Rare Canids Act. Sincerely, (Your name and address be inserted here) ***********************END OF LETTER TEXT********************* _____________________________________________________________________ You received this message because [EMAIL PROTECTED] is an activist with the World Wildlife Fund Conservation Action Network. _____________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] from [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word REMOVE in the subject line or you can unsubscribe at http://takeaction.worldwildlife.org/unsubscribe/index.asp. _____________________________________________________________________ Direct any questions about the WWF Conservation Action Network to [EMAIL PROTECTED] _____________________________________________________________________ The Conservation Action Network is sponsored by World Wildlife Fund-US.
