John M. Bennett's Backwords takes his revolution in the use of
language a step further by creating poems and visual poems that must
be read backward and forward at the same time. The result is texts
that are both linear and, like visual art, simultaneous. He has thus
created an essentially paradoxical literary form; one that cannot
exist, yet does. Bennett has published over 250 books and chapbooks,
and has labored, both in his own work, and through his work as
editor, collaborator, publisher, and archivist to create a new
language; one that would expand the functions of language into all
possible areas of human expression and consciousness.
FURTHEREST FICTIONS
As a successor to More Short Fictions (1980), probably the most
extreme collection within its genre ever, Furtherest Fictions is
meant to be even more extreme as a collection of stories whose
narrative vectors are both visual and verbal, in some cases depending
upon changes in only one letter, in other cases upon leaps across
time and space. Richard Kostelanetz's indubitably radical fictions
are featured in individual entries on his work in Contemporary
Novelists, Postmodern Fiction, A Reader's Guide to Twentieth-Century
Writers, and the Encyclopedia Britannica, among other distinguished
directories.
