Engaging ELLs in Meaningful Social Studies and Literacy Learning

In this clinic, Dr. McGuire introduces the Storypath
<http://www.socialstudies.com/storypath.html>  approach to content-based
literacy to illustrate how using narrative encourages students to
participate in learning experiences. From the viewpoint of a character,
students construct personal understandings about subject matter and apply
literacy skills within a meaningful context.
 
In this session, Dr. McGuire
·      Discusses innovative strategies for developing deep social studies
learning and talking, reading, and writing skills within the context of the
approach

·      Examines ELL strategies in relation to the Storypath
<http://www.socialstudies.com/storypath.html>  approach
* Explores how the use of narrative enhances English learners¹ engagement
and creates ³the lived experience²
* Demonstrates how this narrative approach can be used across all levels of
elementary and middle school to adapt curriculum topics
