thanks for your answer.
Of course I will do what you proposed and ask my provider to configure
the sshd daemon for sftp.

1) But: I'm practicing FTP to this very same server since about 1996 and
always with the freeware version of WS_FTP. Never with any failure. So
it escapes me, why now the server is the cause for this mistake.
2) I did in fact upload all necessary webpages to this server with the
evaluation version of WS_FTP V7. So, principally, the communication
works. The complaint is that WS_FTP Version 7 did upload some webpages
which it was not supposed to do (because they haven't changed since the
last upload).
