Alan, this is a test page based on Jon Hicks code http://www.dlaakso.com/center-stuff.html
Tested and works, more or less, in XP_SP2 IE6.0, FF1.0, Opera7.54u2, and Safari. Degrades to h-center, vertically 22px from top viewport, in Mac/IE5x (Mac/IE not tested).
