The appearance property can have its nice uses, but it's limited by the collective imagination of the CSS WG. If you want to make your own widget that's not in the list, at least with system colours you can get something reasonably close (and stick to the user's settings, inclusing for instance high contrast).

If it's not broken don't deprecate it.
