Typography on the web has come a long way, and even more so recently.

Check out

   * Google Font Directory http://code.google.com/webfonts
   * TypeKit http://typekit.com/ which can be used through Google Font
     Directory

In some cases client may have to pay (TypeKit) but they do have at least have the option of picking a font that is close to what they need.

of course client font selection and readability is another issue.

Yes. My client has just asked me to use some weird font I've never heard of! I will try and dissuade him.
That's why many graphic designers make poor Web Designers - they can't get their head round the flexibility that needs to be designed into a Website.
