Thanks for the suggestion. In the end I went for the checked in dummy 
file in a sub-directory and an extra include path in the qmake file.

Saves messin' with platform dependent commands or new build 
pre-requisites and is probably less prone to accidental checkin mistakes 
from those that build with qmake in their svn workspace.
