Thanks Bill, that looks like a nice and clean solution. I tinkered with
it a bit last night and it seems to work just as advertised.

Chuck - It looks to me like Bill's approach should just work. I can't
think of any reason why custom udev rules would make any difference. The
Qt wiki indicates that QtSerialPort is fully supported on Linux, MacOSX,
and Windows.
