---This is not old WSJT-X v.1.9.0-rc3 topic and is opening 1838-1843kHz topic
for WSJT-X service in Japan----

Hi everyone,

It has been more than a year after writing the status of allocation on 160m
band last year and I am glad to inform to all of world WSJT favorites a good
news that Japanese regulatory agency has recently released their official
intention in public to start the study on the possible band plan reform for
radio amateur service on MF band (author’s note: 160m band) from this fiscal
year based on the trend of existent commercial radio services (author’s note:
reduction of radio buoy service) . In fact, this announcement is their response
to on my inquiry submitted in June this year asking to inform the progress
which they had promised last year.

In Japan, this type of announcement means that they have already completed
their pre-study and got their internal consensus to open 1838-1843kHz for us.

Historically, this is the major opening action on 160m after the allocation for
CW band spectrum i.e. 1810-1825kHz in year 2000 and the first action to
allocate narrow-band digital spectrum based on the sprit of international
harmonization along with IARU region I and II.

Here, I especially thank JARL to lobby the agency with fully understanding of
our WSJT-X users expectation and also the development team, especially Bill
Sommerville, G4WJS, who kindly changed 80m default frequency for JA and
encouraged me to work on 160m spectrum in 2017. I know he faced a lots of
criticism and difficulty from the rest of the world at that time.

The agency has not yet told us about the exact opening date but I personally
expect it will be at the end of this year or so.

Regards,

take

Hi,

In this thread, I see a few comments related to JA spectrum allocation. Thus, I
summarized the status as follow for your reference.

1907.5-1912.5KHz (total 5kHz) is allocated to narrow band digital. Therefore,
both daily WSJT-X and DX pedition would be split mode. Daily FT-8 split QSO
QRG is 1840/1908. For DX pedition mode, we are flexible as long as TX spectrum
is with in above 5kHz range.

Goa for JA operators is to open IARU harmonized narrow band digital chunk i.e.
1838-1843KHz. Therefore, I expect DX pedition mode will be selected in this
5kHz range as well.

I have been lobbying both to regulation body (MPT) and to JARL from last summer
to allocate 1838-1843kHz for us. I learned that it has been allocated to
fisheries radios service (radio buoyes) but there is no license issued in this
chunk. JARL, as official lobbyist, is telling me that they are also requesting
to open the chunk but they are pessimistic about my expectation to be opened by
the end of this year.

I see a few comments in this thread to explore current CW band for DX pedition.
In this case, it is nice for us to consider 1810-1825kHz which is allocated to
CW mode, neither 1826.5kHz nor 1830-1835kHz mentioned in this thread. Then, it
will be an easier deal for us as the players are limited to within radio
amateur society.

As summary, it is a fact that we have to use split mode on 160m anyway. Thus, I
hope split mode feature is also well tested and practiced under “FT8 Dxpedition
mode release candidates timeframe”.

Regards.
