I think Serge's question might be why is FT4 MODE/SUBMODE and FT8 is just MODE
? And I think the answer is 'evolution of the committees thought process'.
If the committee had know what new things where coming, then both FT8 and FT4 (
and jt65/jt9 ) would be MODE=MSK and SUBMODE=....
+ That's exactly right. Not to make excuses, but there was significant time
pressure on ADIF to approve a representation for FT8 in ADIF 3.0.7 (2017-08-13).
+ It was the subsequent proposed addition of JS8 that surfaced the controversy
over MODE-SUBMODE technical accuracy. The representation chosen for JS8 in ADIF
3.0.9 was <MODE:4>MFSK <SUBMODE:3>JS8 . The choice of <MODE:4>MFSK
<SUBMODE:3>FT4 in ADIF 3.1.0 was consistent with the JS8 decision.
