I think this was probably caused by some automatic Debian update of the php packages on the server. Apparently it's due a case where PHP handles some things differently depending on whether it's in strict mode or not, and maybe some update caused PHP to be switched to strict mode. Or something.
Anyway, I think I've fixed it now.
