About http://www.w3.org/TR/2006/WD-xhtml2-20060726/ Keeping old markup will not help that much the transition. XHTML 2.0 has a versatility of new features which are tied to the attributes. It's great because it gives more flexibility for creating new semantics model as microformats community started to show it with class attribute. Keeping old elements with the new attributes will encourage weird usage of them which might destroy the initial semantics and add confusion.
