CLF and the [date]

Looking at:

http://www.w3.org/Daemon/User/Config/Logging.html#common-logfile-format

the format of the [date] is undefined.

Is there anything that states that this:

should include a two digit year?
should include a four digit year?
do whatever you feel like?
