Although I do not pretend to understand any of the explanations that
have been offered, attached to this email is a posting to a newsgroup
that might be relevant.

For all I know, it might just be repeating Andrew Bishop's explanation
in vaguer terms.

I hope I am not being a bore by continuing to worry about javascript,
but my abysmal failures in my attempts to get netbanking to work is
one of the reasons.

Most european banks use the HBCI Protocol for transactions. it doesn't 
have a user_agent barrier, because it doesn't depend on the security of 
browsers. Encryption is done either by a server or by the Client, with 
56-Bit DES. 

Most bank servers use either Java or JavaScript for it.**** Many 
JavaScript versions have the problem that they "trap" some API Calls, 
which means they only work under Windows.****
