Unfortunately, the story is more complex.

The offending URLs are called by pages that are monitored every day.
So purging achieves nothing.  The next day's download restores the
deletions.

However, my cry for help was not in vain.  It led to drawing my
attention to the revised (and greatly simplified) format for viewing and
editing the WWWOFFLE configuration file.

I suppose that I can blame no one but myself for not discovering this
earlier.

But blowing your own trumpet once in a while would do no harm.
