I suppose these are the things that a competent Linux-user does not need to be told. I knew nothing about "rm config.cache" and have still to work out when and at what stage to use "make clean". However, to make a bad story worse, shortly after my premature howl I decided to try the patched file-install again starting with "./configure" instead of starting with "make". And lo, everything worked and I have a shiny new WWWOFFLE-2.7b - fully operational. My thanks to both respondents for their suggestions - and I wish Andrew Bishop were a bit less efficient in posting messages sent to the List.
