If Mozilla is using the wwwoffle.pac file then it will be using
WWWOFFLE to access the internet since that is what the file
configures.

You could try manually configuring the Mozilla proxy settings to make
sure.

This sounds very strange, I don't know what could of been happening
during that time.  There is nothing in WWWOFFLE that will make it
download large files unless you ask for them.

Is wwwoffled running?
What does the syslog file say about wwwoffled?
